2 people, 2 worlds. This work represents 2 people who are close, evenly in place with the same things, but in different worlds that separate them. Both are landscapes set with different flashbacks that simulate those 2 people, they reside really close but too far away, so alike but very different from each other, they would love to be together, but they can't as they are worlds apart. A friend close to me with whom I was very similar but also different inspired me, as well as friends who are close by one means but far away by being in different countries making us be in different worlds.
2 personas, 2 mundos.
Last Trip 2022 sharpies, colored pencils, and pastels 12” x 18”
My beautiful town. This view is my grandfather's boat approaching the town where he was born in one of his first boats called "I don't know anything". My grandfather died on December 21, 2020, and passing time after his departure I felt that Iwas beginning to forget him and my family as well. I did this work for him because I wanted to have something to remember him by and the others too, plus feel he was someone worth sharing about. This is one way to do it for me. He had a shrimp boat and his job was to fish on it, when he came home from his trip, it wasn't much. The town is close to the sea so if my family and I went to town, he would visit us arriving as close to the beach as possible. That village is where he and my grandmother were born they took me and their culture was instilled in me there. He was part of me and who I am.
Freedom 2022 Colored pencils and markers 8” x 7”
We are Free. That is the point of this play, one of the first things one associates with freedom when it’s mentioned is the color green and the street. We all know that even if it's dangerous out there you are free in it, sometimes they judge you, but nobody cares about what you use, they just accept you and let you take risks, they help you do it, be better at it and get you out of your shell. That's why I chose the urban style and everything that goes with the piece, but mainly its name, "Freedom". If you are not from here, you grow up watching, in my case, movies related to Detroit or New York neighborhoods as a center of all kinds of dance, you see graffiti on the walls and you like it, that calls you. That was my inspiration for this project, the liberty that is in there, and that nobody judges you, you can do whatever you want because, at the end of the day, you are free. This is what I grew up with so it's about me too, this art shows me, this one is freer, and this is my free self, the one that takes risks, the one that is not afraid. We have freedom, so why not take a risk and enjoy?
Somos libres.
